Microchipping

From 06 April 2016, The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2014 will be in force. It is to be enforced by local authorities, police officers and community support officers. An owner or keeper of a dog that is not microchipped may be liable to a fine of up to £500 and an enforcement notice. It is also compulsory if transferring ownership of a dog to a new keeper for the dog to be microchipped. This means that breeders of puppies (whether registered, hobby or “accidental”) are required to have the puppies microchipped and registered in their own name prior to sale and transfer to a new owner. Essentially, there are no exemptions unless a vet certifies that your dog cannot be microchipped for health reasons.

Puppy microchipping

A common question asked is: “From what age does my puppy need to be microchipped?” As explained above, it is now the law that the breeder of a puppy or puppies is responsible for having them microchipped BEFORE selling to or re-homing them with a new owner. The term “breeder” includes anyone whose dog gives birth to a puppy, not only registered dog breeders.

This means that there is no minimum age, but the regulations require a puppy to be microchipped and have their details registered on an approved database by 8 weeks of age. Note that it is not enough just to have the chip implanted – completion of the registration on a database also has to be done within the 8 week period allowed.

Rabbit vaccinations

Sadly, rabbits who contract myxomatosis usually have to be put to sleep. Subject to a free health check, Carrot Tops offers an annual, combined rabbit vaccination that protects against both myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) (also known as rabbit calicivirus disease) as well RHD2 all of these diseases are generally fatal in domestic rabbits, cause them a great deal of suffering, and there is no effective treatment once contracted. Vaccination is thus strongly recommended.
